Guard had left his family behind in Poland to apprentice with a tailor in France when World War II began. He left his apprenticeship to join the French army, though he was always seen as an outsider by his comrades.

That is, until an Irish doctor volunteered as a medic. Doc and Guard bonded immediately, both because they both felt like outsiders and because Guard was Doc's most frequent visitor. Doc was also there for a secret mission--giving the soldiers a multidose serum designed to make them stronger than the average human. For a variety of reasons, it was only effective in Doc and Guard.

Doc and Guard’s closeness gave way into a romantic relationship, which they kept mostly secret. Though even if their comrades found out, Guard was always ferocious and brutal enough in fights that fear of him could easily trump any other feelings they might’ve had about the relationship. Plus, no one was willing to act against their doctor in an active combat zone.

The two served together until the end of the War, when they separated. Guard went to look for his family and felt that was something he needed to do alone. He intended to meet Doc in Ireland again, but when he found out his family had died, Guard lost himself in grief and looked for the next conflict he could throw himself into, focusing on violence rather than his sorrow.

He became a mercenary, known to be a very effective one, though very few people ever got to know much about his personal life.
